With each elementary school visit, Emmy nominated animation filmmaker, award-winning educator and acclaimed author and illustrator Jeff Chiba Stearns brings his children’s books MIXED CRITTERS and NORI AND HIS DELICIOUS DREAMS to life through entertaining readings and engaging drawing workshops. After an interactive reading, Jeff will lead an energetic discussion about his work and conduct a drawing workshop where he will teach students techniques on how to create appealing characters and illustrations. After the presentation, primary students will be inspired to use their imaginations and create their own mixed animals based on Jeff’s best-selling book MIXED CRITTERS.

For intermediate grades and middle school students, Jeff will present and discuss the creation of his graphic novel ON BEING YUKIKO. He will also discuss many topics in the graphic novel including the interment of Japanese Canadians during WWII. After each presentation Jeff will also lead students in an illustration workshop where he will demonstrate how he creates appealing characters.

ASSEMBLIES AND LIBRARY PRESENTATIONS

Presented in assembly style format Jeff will project and read pages from his books as students follow along. Illustration demonstrations are conducted on a whiteboard and depending on the size of the group can also be projected on a screen using a camera. Jeff can accommodate one large assembly or multiple library / classroom presentations.

PRAISE FROM TEACHERS

“The students were highly engaged both by the books themselves and also how Jeff related to the children! His presentation was a great blend of reviewing “Mixed Critters”, introducing “Nori and His Delicious Dreams” and his drawing demonstrations. The children were very focused when being given the opportunity to create their own mixed critter! Our Grade 5 and Kindergarten communities, together, are currently in the process of collaboratively creating our own version of a mixed critters alphabet book! Students, staff, and parents were blown away by the personal touch that Jeff gave to his autographs and how he personalized the books for those who purchased copies.” - Carrie Yamaoka, Kindergarten Teacher at Quigley Elementary
